Police are investigating after former US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Jessica Eber was found dead in her Virginia home Saturday morning. According to a statement from Alexandria Police, police received a report of an unconscious woman at 9:18 a.m. on Saturday and found her dead. She was later identified as Eber, who was nominated by former President Joe Biden for the role of US Attorney in 2021. Eber was 43.
Eber resigned from her high-profile role that she had held since 2021, effective the day before President Donald Trump was sworn in in January.
“We are saddened beyond words to hear of the passing of our friend and former colleague, U.S. Attorney Jessica Eber,” said Eric Seibert, the current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
“She was unmatched as a leader, mentor and prosecutor, and as a human being she is without equal. We are amazed at how much she accomplished in her very short time in this world. Her professionalism, decency and legal acumen set the standard.”
“Although we are devastated by this loss, each of us in the Eastern District of Virginia will look to her example and strive to live up to that standard. Jess was a proud Virginian from high school to college and throughout her career. She loved EDVA and EDVA loved her.
We remain committed to her life’s work, a commitment to seeking justice as she would have wanted it.” Eber’s cause of death is currently unknown. As protocol, Alexandria police are investigating the circumstances of her death.
Police announced that the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of her death.
“I have been fortunate to spend my career as a prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, where I have worked alongside talented, hardworking public servants who manage cases that affect citizens here and around the world,” Eber said in his resignation statement in January.
“It is a great honor to conclude my service as U.S. Attorney for the District… I am proud of the work I have done with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners to enforce the law and build community trust.” Eber received the Assistant Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service from the Department of Justice in 2019.
